Does student health insurance cover maternity care?
A: Yes, maternity care is covered.  Dependent children are also included, so you will not have to seek separate insurance for your child’s pediatric care.

 

Where can I get the money to parent while staying in school?
You can save money on baby supplies by enrolling in an “Learn While You Earn” program, offered at the pregnancy clinics listed on thehome pageBy attending parenting classes, you earn points which you can then redeem for diapers, clothing, and other products.  The same clinics can help you apply for the Women Infants and Children program (WIC) and other subsidies.

Make sure you receive the child tax credit!  If your income is under $42,000, you can get your taxes prepared for free through theProsperity Campaign.

Can I live on campus after the baby is born?
Unfortunately, the University of Miami does not offer family housing.  You can search nearby off-campus housing here.

Where can I access affordable child care?
Catholic Charities day caresprovide free services to any family that qualifies for government assistance.  YMCA of Greater Miami offers asimilar program, but only after the baby’s first birthday.  To find out if you qualify for a government child care subsidy, call 1-866-357-3239.

Although there is child care on campus, it is not affordable for all students.  The Miami Hurricane reports that for preschoolers, tuition is $635 a month.  If you are interested, their office is located across from Mahoney-Pearson.  

Ebenezer Day Care charges $130 a week ($520 a month), but offers discounts to students.  They are located at 4111 SW 4th St. in Coral Gables.  Their phone number is 305-443-1992.  Let them know that you heard about them from UMiamiPregnancy.org.
