Pregnancy Signs Some signs of pregnancy are more frequent urinating, an improved sense of smell, swollen breasts, nausea, and a missed period. Bear in mind that some pregnant women experience none of these signs, and women who are not pregnant may experience them for other reasons.
Urine Testing To get an accurate result with a urine test, you should wait until you have missed your period. Tests are offered at the health center and are covered by student insurance. However, the charge will be visible on the insurance bill that is sent to your parents. For that reason, many students choose to pay for the test themselves. If you take that route, the charge will be $20. Free pregnancy tests are offered at the non-profit clinics listed on the home page. Urine tests can also be purchased for under $20 at CVS, Target, etc.
Ultrasound If your urine test comes out positive, your next step is to get an ultrasound. This will determine how far along you are, and can also detect ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants in a fallopian tube instead of in the uterine wall. This condition is life-threatening for the mother and not survivable for the embryo. Early detection is crucial to prevent the rupture of the fallopian tube. Later in pregnancy, ultrasound can reveal the baby’s sex. Currently, free ultrasounds are available only at the Hialeah and North Miami Pregnancy Help Medical Clinics (see home page). You may also get an ultrasound from your private ob/gyn; the cost will vary depending on your physician and insurance provider. The student health center does not provide ultrasounds.
